Hello everybody, hope you’re all safe.

I recently bought off a fellow luthier's stock. There are big plastic jars of ColorTone compounds which have dried and slightly shrunk from the sides, say about ¼ " all around. Can this stuff be rehydrated in any way or do I just have to toss it off? Can I use it as is to load on buffing wheels?

Thanks for your ideas, you’re the greatest bunch of people. Keep safe.

It's junk. maybe you could but why even take the chance? Ever seen a failed pore fill under finish?

I just asked Google about it and was rewarded with something I had not anticipated. ;-)

IT is water based though right? So it might be worth a try. Of course always test your results though.

Not sure about the base. I've written to SM about it to check. Might be worth the trouble, there's quite a bit of stuff in those big jars.

Just so you know, Larry Anderson at SM answered about those compounds :

"Use mineral spirits to thin the compounds if they have dried out. Those are not waterbased. "
